Key dredging works to commence at Port MacDonnell

15 March 2022

Major dredging works at Port MacDonnell will commence in late March 2022, weather permitting, to improve safety and access to the harbour, boat ramp and mooring ground for boat users.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) has undertaken extensive consultation with the District Council of Grant since 2019 to ensure the planned harbour dredging meets community and stakeholder needs.

The Department’s Director of Marine Services, James Buder, said the important dredging works will help improve productivity for local businesses and the fishing industry.

“The site requires major dredging to ensure the ongoing safe use of the harbour, boat ramp and mooring areas,” he said.

“The works will be progressed under strict environmental standards and will aim to minimise impacts to the fishing industry, community, the environment and marine ecosystem.”

Works are expected to be completed by late July 2022, weather permitting.

The project will include the removal of a significant accumulation of sandy materials at the harbour entrance and mooring grounds. Dredging will also remove a build-up of seaweed inside the (harbour) channel.

Organic materials dredged from the channel will be screened, drained and transported to the adjacent western beach.

Sand dredged from the harbour entrance will be deposited for replenishment of sandy beaches located east of the harbour.

Works will be undertaken 24-hours a day, seven days-a-week, to ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible. However, the works must meet reduced noise levels between 10pm and 7am to limit any impact on nearby residents, and works are subject to an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) licence.

Works will cease if dolphins or seals are observed within five metres of any dredging.

The harbour entrance will be accessible to boat operators during works, but the ramp will be limited to one lane until late April. Boats using the boat haven entrance are advised to use caution and follow the 4-knot speed limit.

Key project information and updates will be available via the Department’s Facebook and Twitter or via website www.dit.sa.gov.au/portmacdredging.

The Department and the District Council of Grant appreciate your patience and understanding during these important works.
